Fun Summer of the Ditzy Blonde
From All The King's Men by Robert Penn Warren
“The night before, which was windless, with a full moon and an atmosphere that scarcely cooled or stirred with the coming on of evening, Anne and I had swum down to the hotel diving tower, late enough for everybody else to be out of the water. We lay on the big float for a while, not doing any talking, not touching each other, just lying on our backs and looking up at the sky. After a...

The Darrow School, 1969
she put down the book and went to get a cup of water
Just as the sun dipped below the horizon, it began to snow. At first it looked as if a breeze had only kicked up snow from the trees. But the sky turned gray, then white. The blizzard raged till 2 am. Then a full moon appeared. There was no more wind. Everything was still, listening.

I read The Graduate by Charles Webb. As I read it, I felt I was in a hypnotic state. The meaning of ‘my eyes were glued to the page’ became apparent. It was Harry Potter level of absorbment.
I originally picked it up in order to see if I could learn some more clues that would help me solve the central mystery of the movie—Why doesn’t Mrs. Robinson want Benjamin to meet...
While they were standing around, wondering what they should do, the owl, Too-Too, suddenly said, “Sh! Listen! I do believe there’s someone in there!” They all kept still a moment. Then the Doctor said, “You must be mistaken, Too-Too. I don’t hear anything.” “I’m sure of it,” said the owl. “Sh! There it is again—don’t you...
From Dr. Burns: Only specific problems exist
“At the start of therapy, I say, “What are your goals for treatment? If we had a magic wand, and we could solve all your problems and make all your dreams come true, what would happen? How would we know?”
The person generally lists a number of goals: greater self-esteem, get over my depression, learn how to find a new job, get over my shyness and start dating, and lose 15...
The Voyages of Dr. Dolittle
I am reading Dr. Dolittle by Hugh Lofting. I had heard about this book, but never gave it a go till yesterday when I read it on the train to NYC to get my new haircut.
It’s amazing. It’s obvious why it is a classic. There is something very charming and readable about it. It’s pretty funny, but most of all, it gives you the sense that the world is a very safe place and nothing...
I saw Avatar.
I cannot wait to see all movies in 3D. However, I think there might be some problems in store for us when technology allows fantasy to become as real as reality, through movies or video games or the like.
In Don Quixote, the man of la mancha escapes into a fantasy world of the chivalrous golden age after reading too many books. Now that movies have become so real…perhaps we...

Maus
Graphic novels suck you in fast like TV does. I found Maus: A Survivor’s tale, Part I, by Art Spiegelman tonight in the house and it really sucked me in. I scoured the whole house for Maus: Part II, but can’t find it. Probably just as well, since it is pretty intense. I read on Wikipedia that Part I came out in 1986 and Part II came out five years later, so in a way I am experiencing...

Magic, Freedom, and Adventure
I read a book in B&N today. It’s the above book. Different authors wrote about how a certain book from childhood had influenced their life. I highly recommend it, but then again, this is just the kind of book I like. I thought two ideas from it were cool.
One is that “in childhood, all books are books of divination, telling us the future.” In childhood, you haven’t...
Ode to My Socks, by Pablo Neruda (translated by...
Mara Mori brought me a pair of socks which she knitted herself with her sheepherder’s hands, two socks as soft as rabbits. I slipped my feet into them as if they were two cases knitted with threads of twilight and goatskin, Violent socks, my feet were two fish made of wool, two long sharks sea blue, shot through by one golden thread, two immense blackbirds, two cannons, my...
Roald Dahl, James Herriot, and Lloyd Alexander, 3 of my favorite authors, were all in the RAF.

Never Again Would Bird's Song Be The Same, by...
He would declare and could himself believe
That the birds there in all the garden round
From having heard the daylong voice of Eve
Had added to their own an oversound,
Her tone of meaning but without the words.
Admittedly an eloquence so soft
Could only have had an influence on birds
When call or laughter carried it aloft.
Be that as may be, she was in their song.
Moreover her voice upon their...

The dogs greet me, I descend

people-style, seeking more love.
I've come home wanting to touch
everyone, everything; usually I turn
the key and they're all...

What was the deal with that facebook inside joke thing tonight? Who started it and how did it catch on? I thought it was awesome though.
Update: it was a breast cancer thingy. Flash the audience. I was thinking it was underwear, but I guess it was bra. Still it was cool.
Check out the rose crown. I predict this is the new thing.

Why Beautiful People Have More Daughters
I just read an interesting book called Why Do Beautiful People Have More Daughters written by some evolutionary psychologists. Beauty is a more evolutionarily helpful trait for girls to have than boys so attractive people are slightly more likely to have girls—you get the gist.
The book was great. From what I gathered, the goal in life for a girl is to have kids with the best looking guy...
