We are alone, absolutely alone, on this chance planet: and amid all the forms of life that surround us, not one, excepting the dog, has made an alliance with us. —Maurice Maeterlinck, quote from the moving epilogue of Be The Pack Leader, link to google books page, by Cesar Millan

I went to Barnes and Nobles yesterday to check out their wares. I ended up reading quite a few different things. The first thing that drew me in was Kendra Wilkinson’s memoir called Sliding into Home. I started in the middle after she had gotten over her drug addiction. She was the kind of girl who was very open and honest and ready to try anything and very interested in having fun and...

Dr. O’Sullivan talks about how people who lie to their friends are less accurate in lie detection. I found this fascinating and it supports what I see in life. The more a person deludes themselves and others, the more removed from reality they become, and the more difficulty they will have in seeing the truth. It’s a good reason to be honest, if you ask me. from eyesforlies

Tous Les Jours Dimanche
I found the most incredible french blog called fittingly tous les jours dimanche meaning always Sunday. She is the nienie of France it seems, in other words, a mommyblogger with an awesome seeming life that you can live vicariously through her blog. I was dumbstruck looking at the pictures. It seemed this large family lived in a fairy tale world—a cross between an anthropologie catalog, the...

Margaret Wise Brown, writer of Songs and Nonsense.
I am on Vinalhaven right now. I remember reading a great article about a famous resident of this island—Margaret Wise Brown, author of the haunting Goodnight Moon. She seemed like a wild creative eccentric genius who danced to the beat of her own drum. She lived in a house here she called “The Only House”. I am unable to find the article I read, but here are some...

I have been reading about the life of William Morris. It seems Morris was inspired by the themes of the forest, King Arthur, chivalry, nobility, purity, mystery, mysticism, art, the gothic, the romantic. I like to try to find images that express a certain way I’m feeling or a feeling I’m thinking about in google images. I hold the feeling in my mind and google many different...

William Morris’ wife Jane   Moriss fell in love with her while painting her for this pic and wrote on the back of the canvas, ”I cannot paint you, but I love you.” Morris eventually married her, but the pre raphaelite painter and Moriss’s business partner, Dante Gabriel Rosetti was in love with her too, even though he was married to another model. They ended up having...

Fillippa Berg
Fillippa Berg’s blog is awesome. She is a Swedish fashion blogger and stylist with an awesome style. It seems she wants to be a combination of Shelly Duval, Bianca Jagger, and a gypsy. She describes her look as psychedelic schoolgirl. She spent her childhood backpacking with her parents through north Africa and eastern Europe—which...

Ode to Mulan--the original poem that inspired...
Ji-ji, again ji-ji, Mulan faces the door, weaving. You can’t hear the sound of the loom’s shuttle, You only hear Daughter’s sighs.  They ask Daughter who’s in her thought, They ask Daughter who’s on her memory. “No one is on Daughter’s thought, No one is on Daughter’s memory.  Last night I...

To collect or not to collect? When I was younger I loved to go to antique stores and flea markets and buy old things, much like many kindred spirits in the blogosphere. Then I had backlash. I became minimalist. This phase culminated in my senior year of college, when I didn’t even buy a bed but lived in a white walled room with my only furniture an old crate as a desk and my mattress...

Pretty soon it darkened up, and begun to thunder and lighten; so the birds was right about it. Directly it begun to rain, and it rained like all fury, too, and I never see the wind blow so. It was one of these regular summer storms. It would get so dark that it looked all blue-black outside, and lovely; and the rain would thrash along by so thick that the trees off a little ways looked dim and...

I draw a bath, enter the water as a god enters water: Fertile, knowing, kind, surrounded by glass objects Which could break easily if mishandled or ill-touched. Everyone knows an unworshipped woman will betray you. There is always that promise, I like that. Kingdom of Kinesis. Kingdom of Benevolent. I will betray as a god betrays, With tenderheartedness. I've got this mystic streak in me. from...

Things I've Done
1. Went to the hot spot restaurant Egg for breakfast in Williamsburg with two friends. (eggs rothko at egg) 2. Bought a pair of wacky lady gaga-esque sunglasses. (The mental inspirations for my purchase) 3. Watched a TV show called “Locked Up Abroad” about a man who was set up while on vacation to be a drug mule and spent three years in a Peruvian prison. 4. Ate a crepe on...

This looks like a great bath. Almost like a Finnish sauna or a Japanese hot spring bath. Claw foot tubs are nice but I think more ideal is a minimalist wood bathtub such as this one.

I watched a show last night on TLC about the world’s tallest children. They profiled a family of extremely tall people in England, another boy in England who was the only one in the world with a rare genetic defect that made him grow to an enormous height, a 6’9 girl in Jamaica with a 6’5 sister, and a giant teenager in Thailand, who has the guinness record as the world’s...

Today, like every other day, we wake up empty and frightened. Don’t open the door to the study and begin reading. Take down a musical instrument. Let the beauty we love be what we do. There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground. -Rumi

You suppose you are the trouble But you are the cure You suppose that you are the lock on the door But you are the key that opens it It’s too bad that you want to be someone else You don’t see your own face, your own beauty Yet, no face is more beautiful than yours. Rumi
