Roughly an 18.75% Chance of Finding Love through your Hobbies

Just got back from an awesome GROUPON I bought. A DJ Workshop. I had a feeling I would love it and I did. It is so sweeet to make a mix!

I Love it.

A lot.

The teacher was great. She was so encouraging and nice. She moved to NYC when she must have been so young and she has made a living as a DJ for 12 years. DJing is very difficult, but so rewarding.

At the end we got to play our 2 song mix for the class. I did “I need a hero” bonnie Tyler and “what goes around comes around” by JT. I did it great! So fun.

Now I think I am going to sign up for their 6 level DJ course.

It just reminds me…

Everyone is so different. You may feel in life that there is nothing out there for you, like you can’t think of anything you enjoy, or would love to do…

but you can.

They may just be things you don’t think of as legit. But some people make a living off those things—like Djs. Why shouldn’t you give it your best shot too.

The things you like to do may be so different from what your family or friends like to do that you can’t even spot the things you like to do.

I think the important thing to remember is something I learned in Living Alone and Loving It. If you think you have an inkling of something you might be into, you have to give it a shot! Write a note and post it on your mirror that says “Just Do It!”. You have to try it.

I don’t follow this advice as frequently as I should, but when I do I am always amazed. Sometimes you will hit upon something that is better than you ever imagined—for you. Meaning you have more fun doing it than you knew was possible. Or you just feel a sensation of something deep, kind of like this thing is resonating with you on a deeper level. Then you know you hit upon something good!

Here are the things I have tried:

pottery

oil painting

guitar lessons

improv classes

hip hop classes

salsa classes

singing lessons

pole dancing classes

yoga

running

dj classes

starting a blog

Taking an HTML class

Karate

sketch comedy writing class

Tennis

sewing lessons

——

16 things that I can think of. Not that many really. Now I will rank them in order.

5 stars: pole dancing, blogging, dj workshop

4 stars: oil painting, tennis

3 stars: improv, karate, yoga, singing lessons, hip hop, guitar, pottery, sketch comedy,

2 stars: running, salsa classes, sewing

1 star: HTML class

A nice distrubution. Most things I liked. But the feeling of loving something is very different from the feeling of liking something. Loving something feels ALIVE, infinite, so you, exciting, joyful… it makes you feel happy to be alive and sad that you only have max 100 years on earth.

There are some other things I have always wanted to try but have not done yet. Those include Brazilian Jui Jitsu or Muy Thai style MMA wrestling type things, acting, a drawing class, and learning how to shoot a gun for safety reasons, yogurt making, sourdough bread making from wild cultures, kombucha making, cheese making, dog training, and making a movie.

SO my odds are 3/16 or in other words I have roughly a 19% chance of finding something I love to do. That is really not bad odds. Imagine if I tried 100 things, I would have 19?!?!! things I love to do?? The thought is unthinkable. Imagine how rich your life would be if you had 19 things you absolutely loved to do. 100 things is not even an unattainable goal. Some people send out hundreds of resumes without getting a single bite.

So basically…I encourage everyone to HUNT for something that is very “them” and to remember that it may be something unexpected, shameful, weird, gross, uncool—on first glance. Also to remember that you may really like something…but you will KNOW when you are loving something. And yes, you do have to blindly fumble around for it. Often for a long time. But you will probably enjoy the search—for example, I “like” (3 stars) most of the things I tried…greatly actually. But the feeling of a 5 star hobby is sweet beyond compare!

And also track your odds is a great idea (pats self on back)—i’d be very interested to know what other people’s odds are.
